Here is a collection of resources I stumbled upon on how to fix my RROD XBOX back in July of 2007. Short story on how I did mine:

Quote:
I opened it and applied my own flex to the MOBO since there were poor cold solder joints that were visible. Also M$ forgot to put thermal pads on the ramchips underneath the MOBO. So i went to a computer store and bought some aluminum heatsink blocks and filed them to the ramchip width while measuring the distance from the MOBO to the holding bracket.

The inside metal bracket is a heatsink itself, and those thermal pads (poor cheap method from M$) dissipate the heat to the bracket and is collected by the fans. So by making my own custom heatsinks, i dropped the temp of the xbox internally by 7 degrees celcius.

While I was tinkering with that I ordered a custom fan to replace the stock M$ one and added 'ducts' and dividers to make more effective use of the fan. The stock fan and lack of dividers allowed 40% of dead heat to stay in the xbox. On my box one fan sucks GPU heat and the other CPU heat.

Alot of internet research, out of the box thinking, 4 weeks of spare time, and a $70 budget allowed me to make a machine I know will last me for at least 6 or more years and the satisfaction of not relying on M$ and receiving a different broken xbox.

Thanks for listening to my story lol ^_^

^EDIT: Just to tell you if some of you guys go follow my story, ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS BE CAREFUL. In between my ramsinks and the actual ramchips i applied a very small amount of thermal paste called "ARCTIC SILVER". These can be found in most computer stores (Chinese the most), and only a very small amount like 1 drop only and smear it gently across the ramchip (NOT ONTO THE MOBO) with the edge of a plastic card (credit card or something). BEFORE YOU APPLY IT MAKE SURE THE SURFACE OF THE RAMCHIP IS CLEAN, USE AN ALCOHOL SWAB AND GENTLY CLEAN IT FOR DIRT AND IMPURITIES FOR MAXIMUM CONDUCTIVITY.

WHAT IS ARCTIC SILVER 5?: http://www.arcticsilver.com/as5.htm
WHAT ARE RAMSINKS?: http://www.canadacomputers.com/index.ph ... id=527.813

^These are the ramsinks I used and filed them down to about 0.2mm - 0.3mm (that's millimeters folks)

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

For the above, before I started fixing it I used the towel trick around 6 times before it just stopped working.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

BEFORE YOU GO OPENING IT AND GOING RAMBO ON IT, CHECK WHAT ERROR STATUS YOU HAVE ON THE THING. This will tell you whether your box is indeed fixable or permafucked.
^For purposes of this example, my XBOX had error '0110' which is very common in the XBOX community and offers a solution.

CHECK YOUR ERROR STATUS HERE: http://www.llamma.com/xbox360/repair/Xb ... -codes.htm

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Now here are some tutorials I have found very useful in fixing my box. I used a custom method of applying ramsinks (smaller heatsinks for ramchips). Some people goes as far as doing the X-Clamp mod, you can do it but be careful since you can permafuck your box. To make you feel better I am no computer geek, and my RL friend who is stupider than me did the X-clamp mod like he had balls of steel and his works now. Take this with a grain of salt.

^WHEREVER IT SAYS "12V FAN MOD" AVOID IT AT ALL COSTS!!!!. M$ now has a method of detecting this mod and banning your XBOX. I makes no sense to ban people for making their XBOX's cooler, more efficient, and generally more environmentally friendly.

CUTTING THE CASE AND ADDING FANS ON THE SIDE (I ALMOST DID THIS BUT DIDN'T) All together this mod cost 12 bucks

^THOSE BLUE THINGS ARE THE THE RAMSINKS. There are 4 more underneath the MOBO, thats where i put mine (had to file them to get the correct height). I also put heatsinks on the top portion of the MOBO.

I just had our third ... no forth xbox hit the RRoD and this was how we fixed it ...

Wrapped it up in about 5 towels, switched the bugger on until we thought it was cooked enough... switched off and stood the box outside to cool down ...

went back inside ... turned it on and hey presto no more RRoD ...

It's supposed to be a temporary fix, but I've heard of some that have gone much longer without any hiccups, I was told that something or other manages to 'break away' from the board and if heated sufficiently will re-weld itself stronger than before .. I tried it .. it worked

Now if only they stopped the damn things chewing discs it would be a blessing

Well I got the ROD tonight, mine is still under warranty so I didn't want to do anything drastic, and decided to try the towel trick. Well wrapped mine in 3 blankets (I think part of the key is making sure whatever you wrap it with is enough to choke off the ventilation and get it hot), let it get good and hot (almost too hot to touch) then just set it on the coffee table and let it cool down to room temp. Once it was there, fired it up and YIPPEE!!!! Thanks for posting the trick you used Goldie, hopefully it will do some good for a while!
